Florida Family Association Upset with Marvel over "Astonishing X-Men" Gay Wedding Issue

I learned today that the Florida Family Association -- notable for boycotts of DeGrassi, Disney World Gay Days, and All-American Muslim -- has launched an e-mail campaign against Marvel Comics, Disney, and various comic book websites and stores complaining about last month's Astonishing X-Men #51, which featured the wedding of Northstar and longtime boyfriend Kyle Jinadu. It's not that they oppose weddings in comic books. They just don't like gay weddings in comic books -- though they apparently didn't oppose gay weddings in Archie Comics comic books as the FFA didn't respond to the gay wedding of Kevin Keller early this year.

This is the text of the form e-mail letter that is making the rounds, thanks to the Florida Family Association:

Please pull X-Men #51 which promotes and asks kids to fantasize about homosexual marriage. Marvel’s X-Men #51 comic issue has crossed the line by attempting to legitimize same-sex marriage and asking kids to fantasize about their own homosexual wedding. It is shameful that two companies like Marvel and Disney would deliberately create a superhero homosexual wedding for our children to embrace and mimic. PLEASE have more respect for the overwhelming majority of families who do not want their children targeted with immoral propaganda through comics. My family and I urge your company to pull X-Men #51 from distribution. I look forward to your response.

Keep in mind that Marvel Comics features comic books about the gun-toting, criminal-killing vigilantes like the Punisher. They publish titles like Powers, which regularly feature graphic violence, swearing, full-frontal nudity, and sex acts. They publish recurrent mini-series featuring zombie-versions of beloved heroes who eat and mangle innocents. But the FFA is worried about the effect of a gay wedding issue on their kids. I mean, they're not even worried about Wolverine's stomach exploding on the final page of Astonishing X-Men #51! Wolverine's literal gut-churning injury isn't worth a mention, but Northstar's wedding vows are disrespectful to America's children!

(Incidentally, the FFA cannot even be bothered to get the title of the book they are campaigning against right. Just saying...)

Astonishing X-Men #52 will be released in a couple weeks, so the FFA should get its wish and issue #51 will find itself removed from the shelves of comic book stores everywhere.
