One of the things to come out of the Democratic National Convention was the party's official support for marriage equality. The DNC approved the Democratic Party Platform early this week, which included a section supporting marriage equality, supporting the freedom of churches to decide whether or not they support (or not) same-sex marriage without government interferance, and rejecting the Defense of Marriage Act.
Rev. Mike Schuenemeyer, the UCC's executive for heatlh and wholeness advocacy applauded the decision: "These values belong in the platform of every person running for public office. They respect religious freedome and champion equality under the law. They honor the worth and dignity of every person and are among the core values of our faith." Various other conference and local church leaders throughout the United Church of Christ were also quoted in this article in support of the DNC's pro-marriage stance.
