Ms. Lion's Pride: Pekingese Wins Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

Ms. Lion was pretty excited to learn this morning of last night's Westminster Kennel Club winner: a 4-year-old Pekingese named Malachy! Like Ms. Lion, Malacy is 11-pounds and boasts beautiful black and silver fur. Unlike Ms. Lion, Malacy's hair is much more grown out and his face is smooshed in like most good looking pekes.

Ms. Lion is the first non-poodle that I've ever owned -- and even then she's a Pekingese/poodle mix. They are a great breed, though they're not really the best dogs for families with younger kids. Pekes tend to latch onto one or two people and aren't very good at sharing. Fortunately for me, Ms. Lion really loves me. Unfortunately for Husband Mark, Ms. Lion really loves me -- especially at bedtime. She does not like sharing the bed and will sometimes snarl at Mark when he comes to bed or when he rolls around. We need to remind her about sharing the bed (and me) every few weeks. Basically, she gets shunned from both the bed and the bedroom by me. She really doesn't like that. She'll sulk for a bit and then make nice with Mark for a couple weeks and then the cycle resumes.

As much trouble as she sometimes is, I really love Ms. Lion. Despite her attachment to me, she's pretty independent for a lapdog. She has grown to really enjoy the Iowa City Dog Park. She's the type of dog who absolutely loves to have ribbons in her ears or a sweater on her body. She's a hoot to watch whenever we walk her after a grooming. She holds her head up really high and watches for people to comment on her good looks.

Ms. Lion won't win any personality prizes, nor will she be winning the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, but she's pretty excited about her new role model, Malachy.
