It's Squirrel Girl Vs. Kraven the Hunter in UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #1

Several months back, I wrote about a new title from Marvel Comics called THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #1. It seemed like a light-hearted romp, judging from the promo pieces, but I really had no idea. This, by far, has been my favorite comic book published by Marvel Comics in a very long time!

Squirrel Girl is an interesting character. She started out in the early 90s as a throwaway character. If I remember correctly, she was meant to make a comment about the types of characters being created at that time -- and not in a favorable way. She disappeared after an adventure with Iron Man -- after single-handedly defeating Doctor Doom with her army of squirrels -- and then reappeared as a member of the Great Lakes Avengers. She later dated Speedball and became a nanny for New Avengers members Luke Cage and Jessica Jones.

Did I mention that she has a theme song?:
Squirrel Girl, Squirrel Girl!
She's a human and also squirrel!
Can she climb up a tree? Yes she can, easily.
That's why her name is Squirrel Girl!

Is she tough? Listen bud.
She's got partially squirrel blood.
who's her friend? Don't you know: That's the squirrel, Tippy-Toe.
Surprise! She likes to talk to squirrels!

At the top of tree, is where she spends her time
Like a human squirrel.
She enjoys fighting crime!!
Squirrel Girl, Squirrel Girl! Powers of both squirrel and girl!

Finds some nuts, eats some nuts!
Kick bad guys' evil butts!
To her, life a big acorn!
Where there's a city crime-torn,
You'll find the Squirrel Girl!

In THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #1, Squirrel Girl and her faithful sidekick Tippy-Toe have moved out of Avengers Mansion's attic and enrolled at Empire State University. She wants to become the ultimate superhero and has decided that she can accomplish this goal by earning a degree in computer science. But in order to get her degree, she needs to reclaim her secret identity:

Doreen quickly meets her roommate -- an uptight girl by the name of Nancy Whitehead who will take you down if you make fun of her last name, if you criticize her knitting posters, or if you cause trouble for her cat named Mew. We don't get to see too much of Nancy because that's when Kraven the Hunter comes swinging by the dorms with Tippy-Toe in a death-grip!

It seems that Tippy-Toe attacked Kravenl. It's not clear why, but now the Hunter has decided to teach the other squirrels an important message -- by killing Squirrel Girl's little friend! In other words, Squirrel Girl is forced to save her friend and defeat Kravel the Hunter before he causes too much campus trouble!

THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL is totally made for me. It appeals to my comically-skewed Archie Comics sensitivities, which highlighting lots of action and smart dialogue. Plus, it has Squirrel Girl, who's one of my all-time favorite superheroes! This book to totally going on my pull-list. You'd be wise to check it out for yourself! (Did I mention that she goes up against Galactus next issue?)

"The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl" is written by Ryan North, penciled and inked by Erica Henderson (with additional art by Maris Wicks), colored by Rico Renzi, and lettered by VC's Clayton Cowles.
