It all went down on CBN's "The 700 Club" this morning when co-host Terry Meeuwsen asked him the following question during the program's Bring It On segment: "With the law now changed allowing homosexual unions, as a Christian, would I be partaking in the world view of marriage rather than God’s, by getting a marriage license? I don’t believe the government should be involved in marriage to begin with because it’s a ceremony of holy vows between a man and a woman before God. – Rodney"
This is Pat's response:
Pat Robertson: You know, in a sense you are absolutely right. Marriage is a sacrament of the Church. It is a sacrament. It is not something that the Supreme Court should be legislating about marriage. Civil unions, by all means! Don’t over-spiritualize this stuff. You get certain benefits to being married and so you go down and you get a license. It’s like you’re driving a car and so, “I don’t want to drive because the system is evil.” Well, you gotta get a license to drive the car. So don’t worry about it!First of all, same-sex couples have been legally marrying in corners of this country for over a decade. Longer, if you count Vermont's civil unions. Much longer, if you count people like myself who had commitment ceremonies long before we had the option of marriage. The only thing that the Supreme Court did this summer with Obergefell v. Hodges was to make it so that equal marriage rights spread throughout the country instead of the crazy patchwork pattern of marriage equality states.
Still, I'm amazed that Pat Robertson was accepting of the notion of civil unions. That is HUGE!
