One Final "Archie: Riverdale Rescue": Clay Walker Finally Arrives! // Updated Below!

I began writing about the "Archie: Riverdale Rescue" iOS gaming app way back in October 2013. Since then, the game has expanded to PC users. It's an oddly addictive game where you are tasked with the improvement and beautification of Riverdale USA using a variety of recognizable characters, such as Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica. A big part of the game also involves building emotional bonds between the various characters, leading to romantic couples, BFFs, and overall friends.

I've written many posts about the game, its features, and its seasonal updates. Then last week I wrote about the game's upcoming demise. Which made me sad.

My sadness was temporarily halted last week when I discovered that you could buy-in one final character: Clay Walker!

Clay Walker is a character from the now-canceled LIFE WITH ARCHIE series. He was introduced in LIFE WITH ARCHIE #16 when he married an adult Kevin Keller. Clay later got shot in LWA #22, but eventually got better.

There were indications in June 2014 that he was being added to the game. But he wasn't. The "Riverdale Rescue" folks eventually told me that "perfection takes time! We definitely haven't forgotten about Clay, and we'll also have some other content just for Kevin in our next updates."

Personally, I think that they were just putting me off. My hunch is that they couldn't figure out how to introduce an adult gay character to the game and have him interact with his future gay husband who still happens to be a teen!

Regardless, I was literally cheering in my bedroom when I woke to news that Clay Walker was finally in "Riverdale Rescue!" I wrote about it on Facebook and even called Riverdale Podcast to share the news with Jonathan!

I put off writing about Clay and "Riverdale Rescue" until I got a better handle on his storyline. I finally finished Clay's Quests. And his story is Kevin's story... almost literally.

Here is Clay's general storyline: He arrives in Riverdale and has a meal at Pop Tate's. He then goes to the school and meets some people. Betty sees him and develops a huge crush. Clay confides in Jughead that he is gay and that he doesn't want to upset Betty, because he knows that she has a crush on him. Jughead and Ethel eventually break the news to Betty. Betty and Clay bond (despite her unrequited crush) and become BFFs.

Replace Clay with Kevin and Betty with Veronica (plus, add in a scene where Clay and Jughead have a all-you-can-eat food contest) and this is pretty much Kevin Keller's intro story that has been recycled for Clay Walker.

Which pretty much reinforces my belief that they had no clue what to do with Clay Walker after they decided to include him in the game! Still, it's nice to have Clay around. I'm enjoying the opportunity to ship Kevin and Clay together in the game.

All that's to say: Thanks "Riverdale Rescue" for two years of fun preoccupation and for bringing one of my favorite comic book couples back together for one final adventure!

Update: The game is wrapping up, but I managed to shift Kevin Keller and Clay Walker into an official "Riverdale Rescue" romantic couple!

Thanks again for all your effort regarding this game - I've appreciated it :)
Sad to see it going for good, though :(
I'm afraid with both LwA and A:RR gone, we won't see Clay again :(

Who knows? Maybe younger Clay will show up in "Life With Kevin," assuming that this new series actually gets published someday!

And thanks for the kind words about this two-year series of blog posts! It's sad to watch it go. I got used to monitoring for updates and then sharing details about those changes. This last week -- where I was playing the game again and updating Clay's Quests -- reminded me of the fun that I had when "Riverdale Rescue" was fresh and new.

The game was a great distraction from life and it never failed to fuel my imagination with all sorts of questions about Archie Comics!

Ooh, you're right - if they do get LwK off the ground, it would be great to see Clay! Here's hoping! :)
I agree with you about the game - it was a great distraction and fun to make funny pairs, change costumes, decorate the town, etc., but my favourite part was unlocking characters and reading all their first appearances.
I will miss feeling even more involved with Archie Comics than normal, haha :(
Perhaps their new show (if it goes ahead) will fill the void?
